These insects were the only organism found regularly in the early stages of the formation of the fairy circles. The grass root-eating sand termites reduced the grass growth in the vegetationless flats, according to jurgens. Other experts vehemently contradict the biologist.

Fairy circles occur in hundreds of thousands in the arid land near the southwestern coast of africa. Each of the points, drawn as if with a compass, is surrounded by a wreath of tall grass at a closer look. From the bird's perspective the red spots are almost priceless. With diameters up to about 20 meters, they give the impression that the earth had freckles.

In his study, he has raised research on this phenomenon to a solid level of data, jurgens told the news agency dpa. His results were distinguished from earlier scientific assumptions that the bald spots were caused by rising natural gas or ants.

During his study between 2006 and 2012, the biologist investigated a 2000-kilometer stretch of desert from central angola to northwestern south africa. At the bare spots he measured the proportion of soil moisture. His finding: when he stumbled on fairy circles, he also found populations of psammotermes termites in the bare spots and surrounding vegetation. Jurgens found that the insects destroyed all the grasses – which are grounded for a short period of time during rainfall – by killing the roots. All that remained were the empty eaten and circular flat.

According to the study, due to the lack of vegetation, rainwater cannot evaporate at fairy circles. The precipitates seep into the sandy soil and are deposited. This reservoir allows termites to survive in the dry season. At the same time, the subterranean water also provides plants with sufficient moisture, causing a lush ring of vegetation to grow on the edges of the bare spots.

"The termites thus provide a masterpiece of ecosystem design," jurgens emphasized. It is an impressive example of the sustainable use of scarce resources.

However, according to a report in "spiegel online," other researchers consider this explanation to be less than plausible. "I am not convinced that psammotermes allocerus plays a causal role in the formation of the circles," the magazine quotes termite researcher vivienne uys from the plant protection research institute in queenswood, south africa. "In the fairy circles i examined, termites were rather rare," said michael cramer of the university of cape town in south africa.

Walter tschinkel of florida state university in the u.S. Said the report lacked observations that termites were actually destroying the grass. It is also unclear why the patches mostly formed circles, when termites often created long tunnel networks in the ground. "The tunnels, however, do not show any relationship to the circles," tschinkel said, according to "spiegel online".

Whether human, whether animal, whether skyscraper in new york, everything laughs, wobbles happily three-dimensional, everything is united in the coarse teeming james rizzi cosmos, into which also the spectator is irresistibly pulled. After the very successful exhibition in 2008, this unmistakable and original world of art can now be experienced again here in coburg in a rough retrospective in the gallery in der remise. One thing, however, is no longer to be expected this time, the encounter with the artist, who won numerous fans during his visit to coburg at that time. James rizzi died in december 2011 only 61 years old.

So now a train of – yes reverence has come into the contemplation of rizzi's jagged and wavy little figures, which are drawn all over the world, but also too well suited to occupy plates and cups and many objects of everyday use. Products from rizzi's goebel edition, porcelain and hand-painted glass, also complement the lively exhibition in the wiesenstrabe. Isn't that a way to make our world lighter and brighter??

In any case, rizzi held on to his unabashedly childlike view of things, still dancing above all fears and threats, whether the sun, moon and stars, marsmanns, indians, city slickers, fairground visitors and ballplayers in the stadium, dogs and cats and green slatted animals in "good vibrations".

Rizzi reacted to the oppressive density of the modern world, its twitching irritability, its tempo, its shrillness with idiosyncratic, comic-like humor. The painter's two dimensions were clearly too limited for this, so rizzi jumped into the third dimension, achieving that unmistakable intensity and liveliness that is so infectious in its serenity. From a duplicate he often cut out minutely to the smallest elements, what could be captured objectively, and attached his critters with invisible (foam) prints above the actual picture.

In rizzi city
James Rizzi has not captured a typical moment of life in each picture. He has condensed entire life films, stories in thousands of aspects into a single picture. It takes time to try to grasp this, a very enjoyable time of contemplation, with which rizzi is playing another trick on the turf of our present day. In the lawn it leads to the calmness of the contemplation. And now everyone sets the pace. "Nothing is as pretty as a rizzi city", heib one of his paintings, nothing is as inspiring as a rizzi city.

Because the busy exhibition organizers of the glazerei spath, beate heller and bernd hohenstein, have maintained a good relationship with bernd feil, rizzi's long-time friend and publisher, for years, he was now prepared to give this rough number of works, some of which were in his private possession, to coburg. Among them are also some early puffings of the new yorker, so that in a charming way its development can be traced selectively. There are simply line drawings and striking nudes that bear witness to rizzi's precise analytical eye, paintings in which the world has been broken down into individual parts. Or already three-dimensional a painting from 1978 "washington square park" painted in an even freer stroke. One of the works shown here gives then nevertheless a view freely behind the happy scurrying rizzis: "making something out of nothing" from 2005. There rizzi's world teems around a dominant center, the coarse black nothing.

An artist for everyday life

James Rizzi was born in 1950 in new york city, where he was born on the 26th of. December 2011 also died. He studied art in florida. Already during his studies he was engaged in the combination of painting and sculpture and developed the technique of 3D-graphics, which he often used. As his popularity grew, galleys and museums began to take an interest in his work, but rizzi also found a broad field of activity beyond painting, designing records/CD covers, music videos, and objects ranging from phone cards to rosenthal porcelain, among other things. Numerous solo exhibitions and awards were the result, james rizzi is one of the most popular contemporary artists of pop art. Rizzi has been involved in charity work in germany on several occasions.

The formula 1 immediately tweeted a video with michael schumacher. "He is a very talented driver," he said in the interview of a british broadcaster before the 2007 season. Schumacher was then for the first time in horsepower retirement. About whom he spoke? Lewis hamilton.

The briton started his career in the king's class of motorsports at that time. At the end of this year, this hamilton will most likely have replaced schumacher as the most successful driver in the history of formula 1.

"I don't really know what to say about these things," hamilton professed after winning his 88th race. Career victory on sunday had made clear. Three still missing from schumacher's 91 grand prix victories. "We, all the drivers, have grown up watching michael drive" hamilton told us. "What is happening now is a far cry from what i dreamed of as a child."

Title number seven at the end of this season no longer seems doubtful anyway, after hamilton and mercedes solved the problems with the tires within a very short time, despite the three-week stress test. That makes him "proudest of all," stressed team boss toto wolff.

His team does right what ferrari does wrong. The scuderia experienced another disaster weekend, even if vettel saved seventh place and the car seemed at least somewhat improved with the new chassis. But the retirement of charles leclerc due to a defect was a hard hit. In addition, there was the dispute over the right tire strategy, which the parties involved played down after the race in their usual manner. Former formula 1 driver ralf schumacher, on the other hand, spoke plainly as a sky expert: "sorry, ferrari, that's not on at all. A team fighting for the world championship that can't even manage to communicate properly."

But this year ferrari won't even be competing for the world championship. That makes actually only one. Four hamilton wins in six races this season, 37 points ahead of max verstappen, who has to settle for the role of mercedes splitter at the red bull. Valtteri bottas, hamilton's teammate, finished third behind verstappen in spain. Total frustration for 30-year-old finn: "right now i just wanted to be somewhere else than here."Understandable with a world championship backlog of 43 points.

Hamilton, meanwhile, was enjoying the moment, buzzing about one of the best races of his career. 24 seconds ahead of verstappen, 44 ahead of bottas, the rest was lapped. "I was in the perfect zone i always dream of," enthused hamilton.

Some felt reminded of ayrton senna, who had experienced a drive like "in another dimension" at the 1988 monaco grand prix qualifier. "It was beyond my imagination."Hamilton did not experience it the way senna did, however. But he is humble and feels honored every time he is mentioned in the same sentence as drivers such as schumacher, senna and five-time champion juan-manuel fangio.

The fact that he ultimately decided in the car which tires he wanted to finish the race on and voted against the strategists' choice is proof of both the 35-year-old brit's undisputed standing in the team and his understanding of racing. In almost 14 years of formula 1, hamilton has matured into a complete driver. Once a test-drive muffin, he has long since realized that even tasks that don't make any sense are part of success. Hamilton has perfected himself.

92 pole positions and 24 more than schumacher so far. With his spain victory, he also overtook schumacher in the total number of podium places (156:155). He can set the record for grand prix victories in three races – at the grand prix in mugello, of all places, where schumacher's former team ferrari celebrated its 1000th victory. Wants to celebrate grand prix participation.

In the race before – the italian grand prix in monza – hamilton can mathematically win the 100th place. Mercedes clinches victory in formula 1. "Who is going to stop this man??" the swiss tabloid "blick" asked. Schumacher, who hasn't been in public, let alone on a race track, since his serious skiing accident at the end of 2013, and whose successor at the silver arrows is hamilton, probably already suspected it then.

The man is serious. This becomes clear not only when looking at the comprehensive draft for a "municipal election program bamberg" of the party volt clearly, on which hans-gunter brunker with its 25 comrades-in-arms works since six weeks. 1.3 percent of the people of bamberg voted for volt in the european elections 2019, now the young pan-european party also wants to run in the municipal elections 2020 – with hans-gunter brunker as a candidate for the office of mayor of badenburg.

"I liked bamberg design. This has been my home for many years, I have grown fond of the city", says the 52-year-old, for whom the time has come for a change in bamberg. The married father of three has been working as a freelance actor, speaker and presenter since 2013. Previously, the doctor of chemistry was, among other things, a consultant at mckinsey and managing director of a biotechnology company. "I was able to gain a lot of experience and my view is relatively broad. That's important for someone who wants to be active in the community.", says brunker. "In bamberg, there is a sense that the citizens are really interested in their city." when the native of bad bruckenau joined volt, he found "the right people with the right goals" hit. Although his party is still small in bamberg, volt is growing very strongly and has unusually committed members.

Supporter list required

"Many people didn't know us at the time of the european elections, but we did a lot of campaigning and were able to make up considerable ground by the election date." brunker is also preparing his team for the upcoming municipal elections – in order for volt to be able to run in the elections, 340 supporters must first sign up on lists in the town hall. "That will be the first major challenge, says the candidate for mayor. But the goal is: "we want to be a strong faction in the city council."

The nomination meeting is scheduled for november, by which time the election program will also be ready. Already now, economics is emerging as one of the focal points. "We need an economic basis that enables us to finance what is important to us", says brunker. His party wants to focus on the strengths of bamberg as a business location and develop them further: "we must create sustainable jobs." it therefore makes sense to demand companies that will still be able to offer jobs in 20 years' time.

The major employers such as bosch will remain important for him in the future as well. "Such companies are always evolving. We must offer them incentives to establish their forward-looking fields with us." brunker sees a future field in the medical valley, in which bamberg could play an even stronger role: "as a location for academic training in medical professions, we were able to create jobs and at the same time we already had the urgently needed specialists in the city."

According to the volt plans, the opnv should take on a different role and become more attractive for people. Brunker could envision a 365-euro ticket for everyone, not just for schools and trainees. "But we are also looking at the question of whether a special tax of seven euros per capita and month could be used to do without ticket revenue altogether."

For the volt candidate, "something has gone wrong in the housing market; bamberg has missed the boat on development. Brunker wants to see more social housing construction in public hands again. When designing new residential areas, social segregation must be prevented, because "only in this way can we maintain the very good community spirit that we have in bamberg.

Lobby for cultural workers

Many cultural workers know brunker as chairman of the interessengemeinschaft freie darstellende kunstler (association of independent performing artists). In this function, he advocates, among other things, better demands for independent theaters. "There are indications that housekeeping will become more difficult. But that does not mean that we can still make more short work of the art demand." independent culture in particular needs a better lobby in the city council.

The topic of citizen participation also plays an important role in the volt program: "why not present certain projects in an understandable and transparent manner and obtain a test vote from the citizens of bamberg??" this way, the city council and administration could get a feel for the public's opinion early on – and avoid surprises like the muna referendum.

Toyota remains industry leader - vwand gmrucken up

But rivals general motors and volkswagen are catching up; in the second quarter, GM was already able to overtake its japanese competitor.

The toyota group, which also includes daihatsu and hono motors, sold a total of 4.9 million vehicles, the group announced on friday. Number 2, general motors, increased sales by 3.9 percent to 4.85 million cars, followed by VW with around 4.7 million cars and an increase of 5.5 percent.

While GM sold 2.49 million cars in the three months to june, according to the U.S. Business news agency bloomberg, the toyota group sold just 2.48 million. VW sold 2.39 million cars. However, the wolfsburg-based company is working its way up to the world’s leading carmaker GM. VW narrowed the gap to its detroit rival in the 1. Half year to around 150,000 pieces. A year ago, the gap was still around 220,000.

While the U.S. Made strong gains in its home market, it suffered losses in europe and, to a lesser extent, south america. However, volkswagen has also suffered recently from the weak car market in europe.

The VW group has set itself the goal of becoming the number one in the industry by 2018 at the latest. Wolfsburg must overtake GM and toyota to do so. Toyota topped the list last year. The fact that the japanese were able to defend their position in the first half of this year was mainly due to robust sales in north america.

"What we know is that the new laws make such a manipulation attempt, as we have experienced in gottingen, impossible," said health minister daniel bahr (FDP) on thursday in berlin. According to the german press agency (dpa), public prosecutors have meanwhile filed charges against the former head of gottingen's transplant medicine department.

Two days before organ donation day, bahr launched a nationwide campaign with celebrities. "I don't see, when i'm diagnosed with brain death, that these valuable organs are burned or buried," said actor klaus J. Behrendt ("crime scene"). He, like olympic biathlon and weightlifting champions kati wilhelm and matthias steiner, advertises on crude posters for organ donations.

As a result of the transplant scandal, the number of donors fell by 12.8 percent to 1046 in 2012. In the first quarter of 2013, there was a drop of 18 percent to 230. "Every jolt costs human lives," warned bahr, urgently appealing for trust. "We have the strictest rules for organ donation in germany in international comparison," he said. "It is no longer possible for one doctor alone to decide on the position on the waiting list."Today a six-eyes-principle is in force, among other things unannounced examinations were added.

According to bahr, of the 12,000 people on the waiting list, three die every day because there is no suitable organ.

Since july 2012, it has become known that the gottingen doctor is alleged to have reported false health data of patients of the university hospital to the company eurotransplant from 2009 to 2011 in order to give preference to his own patients when receiving a donor liver.

The braunschweig public prosecutor's office accuses the 45-year-old professor of medicine of, among other things, attempted manslaughter in several cases. The authorities would not confirm that charges had been filed.

Since january, the doctor has been in custody under investigation for risk of absconding. Manipulations are also alleged to have taken place in other clinics.

Official audits of all transplant clinics are making progress, doctors say. "In the meantime, the review of the liver programs is nearing completion," doctor president frank ulrich montgomery told dpa.

A year ago, after 15 years of debate, the bundestag decided that all citizens of the federal republic of germany over the age of 16 would in future be asked about their willingness to donate organs after death. According to bahr, the health insurance companies have so far sent information and donor cards to 40 million insured patients.

The gruns urge swift further reforms. This had to come in the remaining three weeks of the session until the parliamentary elections, demanded fraktionschefin renate kunast. "If this does not succeed, a campaign is wasted money, because trust will not return in this way."

More is planned. An expert opinion is currently being prepared to clarify how violations in transplant medicine can be better sanctioned, as bahr told dpa. The health ministry is also to approve the important regulations of the federal medical association in this area. Vice chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group johannes singhammer (CSU) told dpa: "it is a major step forward that the guidelines will in future require state legitimation."

With the establishment of a transplant registry, bahr then wants to improve the removal, placement and use of organs. "This is an important goal."SPD health expert carola reimann told dpa that fewer transplant centers are needed.

Suter wins small crystal ball in downhill race

Corinne suter’s tears of glory and joy were already rolling when the downhill race in crans-montana was still in full swing.

After just a few starters, the swiss skier had the certainty of winning the discipline world cup in downhill for the first time in her career. Before the world cup final in mid march in the noble italian ski resort of cortina d’ampezzo, the 25-year-old, who finished second in the downhill, as she did the day before, can no longer take the small crystal globe out of reach.

Suter leads the downhill world cup with 477 points and only one race to go, ahead of olympic champion ester ledecka from the czech republic (322) and italian federica brignone (320). Suter is the first swiss woman to win the downhill world cup since chantal bournissen in 1991.

Suter’s compatriot lara gut-behrami also enjoyed a dream weekend. Within 24 hours, the experienced swiss skier achieved her second coup at the home world cup in wallis, and did so with a lead of just 0.02 seconds. Third place went to austrian nina ortlieb, three hundredths of a second behind the leader. Suter’s closest rivals in the discipline world cup, brignone and ledecka, finished fourth and fifth respectively on saturday.

In the absence of the injured german skier viktoria rebensburg, kira weidle and co. Once again behind expectations. "The material fits. At the moment, it’s mainly down to self-confidence," said weidle, who after finishing 22nd on friday was only 23rd this time. Was, although their ride was slightly better than the day before.

"It is simply bitter to have achieved two such poor results here. That’s not my goal. And also for the next years, when i think about the goals i have in the departure, i just can’t allow myself to do that. If you don’t like the slope, you have a problem. But I have to be more mentally prepared," said weidle self-critically. In the dolomites they now want to do "damage control". "I like cortina very much. Maybe there are still some things to save."

Patrizia dorsch, who will be the only DSV starter in the combined on sunday, finished in 27th place. Michaele wenig was 29. Veronique hronek 34.

The head of the realschule hochstadt, jutta romeis, retired on tuesday during an internal teachers' conference with the district administrator, the mayor, her husband and her brother. The FT met her for a talk.

Why did you choose teaching as your profession? ?

Jutta romeis: i had good role models.

What drew you to hochstadt secondary school and when did you start working here??

Since the 15. February 2014 i am a secondary school principal in hochstadt. I think hochstadt is a wonderful little town and has just the right infrastructure for a secondary school that wants to be integrated into the town and its environment and the region. This is a good situation for the school, the students and the parents – they know each other and it is easier to go the same way.

I was drawn here because the school is a modern, very well-positioned school – bright, open, on a great site in the green, the school climate friendly both inside and out. And what impressed me on my first visit on a sunday, before i applied, was that the walk of fame – an immortalization of a graduating class – all students of all tenth classes of this year named with their respective class leader. Where schoolchildren and teachers are immortalized together, school life is in order, and they get on well together.

What do you like about this school?? What could be better?

At our school, the cooperation in the teachers' lounge is very good, but also the cooperation between teachers, parents and especially the school committees, which support the school at all times, as corona has just shown again. You find open doors, you get support – as a student and also as a teacher. Schoolchildren, teachers and parents are committed, school life is varied and lively, responsibility locally and globally as well as social commitment and civic courage are emphasized, sustainability and environmental considerations are important to us. Schools can and should participate and do so.

There is always room for improvement, and we have already tackled many of the things we noticed that need improvement.

What were your favorite projects?

Learning buros, our self-determined learning (called fuxzeit), learning islands in the corridors, the establishment of our very successful mountain bike club, our christmas euro for "kinderhilfe nepal e.V.", our fundraiser for the one dollar glasses, our ninth grade presentation projects.

I also think it's wonderful that every class has an author reading every school year – reading education is enormously important (i'm a trained bookseller). Every year a musical is performed and a new theater piece always gives us a great evening in the spring of summer. There is a school newspaper, even digital now, and many ags, and we make our own apple juice for the lunch table and our own honey in the bee club.

What was it like working as a principal??

Never boring, always challenging and time-consuming, sometimes very stressful – mostly very fulfilling and enriching. Never before in my life have i learned so much in such a short time as as a principal. Unfortunately, the administrative part of the work is often very high – it would have been better to have more time for the individual.

What about teaching and teaching today??

Of course, the magic word in schools is "digitalization", and we are well supported and equipped by our local authority, the landratsamt. And corona has shown how important that is too. Nevertheless, I believe that the versatility of the offerings is crucial. Every student needs to find something they are good at, something that sustains them and gives them courage. The basics have only seemingly shifted: reading, writing, math, experimenting, nature and the environment, knowledge of the earth and of the past, and especially art, music and sports are of course always the prerequisite for learning and using modern methods in a modern world.

And yes, we teach bilingual in information technology (voluntary) and in history as part of the language branch.

But to survive in the professional world, we naturally rely on presentation methods, cooperation and results in groups, internet research, self-organized learning and initiative – here, too, corona teaches us that this will be necessary in a global world. The exchange is possible and necessary through modern media in many ways.

I think we're doing a very good job of it at the realschule hochstadt.

How to go on now?

To do many things that were not possible in the past decades due to time constraints: travel with the new camper, time for my rose garden in bamberg – with 800 roses a small rosarium, more time with my husband and with my dog, being creative, the sea, finally dancing and singing again and reading, reading, reading: ,there is no bliss – without books.' the interview was conducted by johanna blum.

Mini portions for euro crisis countries

It relies on strategies that have been used for years in emerging countries in africa and asia: smaller portions or packaging without frills, so that even customers with shrunken wallets stay with the manufacturer. The industry seems to agree that the economic crisis will depress sales expectations in the countries for years to come.

"If a spaniard only spends an average of 17 euros per purchase, then i can’t sell him detergent for half his budget," said unilever europe boss jan zijderveld to the "financial times deutschland" (monday edition). "In indonesia, we sell individual packages of shampoo for two to three cents and still earn a good amount of money," says the company’s CEO. "We know how to do it, but in europe we forgot how to do it in the years before the crisis."

Meanwhile, in spain, unilever offers its surf detergent in packages that only last for five washes. In greece, the british-dutch group marketed mashed potatoes and mayonnaise in small packs, while basic products such as tea or olivenol were sold under a special brand at entry-level prices.

The competition has also reacted. The nestle group has been producing mini portions at low prices for years under the slogan "popular positioned products", for example with only one maggi cube, nescafe for one cup or tutu soups with only one plate portion – partly also for europe. At the same time, the company is constantly working on recipes so that, for example, in addition to the standard soup, a simple product with significantly fewer ingredients and at the same time a lower price can be offered, says a spokesperson.

Henkel CEO kasper rorsted recently expressed skepticism about developments in southern europe during the presentation of his quarterly figures. The crisis in greece, spain, italy and portugal will probably prevent sales increases there for years to come. Since the end of 2011, henkel has been responding to this trend with particularly favorable packaging for liquid laundry detergents, for example – without a dosage cap and convenient spout, but cheaper. The products were well received, says a company spokesman.

Despite the economic crisis, the nestle spokesman does not expect a fundamental change in eating habits. Food and drink traditionally play a bigger role in southern european countries. Around 16 to 18 percent of income went to food in italy, spain and france – compared to 11 to 13 percent in germany. "A change here takes a whole generation."

1000 liters are done

It's a great idea that the young tim pistor from buchau already had in january of last year: to donate 1000 liters of apple juice to the kulmbacher tafel with the help of other partners (as already reported in detail).

Yesterday, on the premises of the "tafel the official handover. Representatives of the schwarzach-schmeilsdorf horticultural association, the kulmbach-kronach savings bank, the transition kulmbacher land and of course the tafel were also present.

About 1700 kilograms of apples were needed to press 1120 liters of apple juice in the schwarzach press house. Tim pistor reported that at least 70 hours of help were needed for the 34 press events. "Some happy fruit growers don't know what to do with all the fruit", according to pistor.

In january 2017, the buchauer made the first contact with elfriede hohn from the tafel. Due to the poor harvest, the ambitious project had to be postponed for the time being. "But this year we were able to get off to a flying start. With the sparkasse we could win a sponsor. According to the motto of the transition town movement "simply – do it now" the helpers set to work a few weeks ago and harvested a total of 1700 kilograms of apples from a meadow orchard in buchau.

The horticultural association of schwarzach-schmeilsdorf took over the pressing and filling in practical bags and saved the regular costs of about 210 euro. Only for the filling and the packing material 500 euro were incurred.

According to tim pistor, the next apple season will show whether the model will catch on.

The head of the kulmbach food bank, elfriede hohn, spoke of a great idea, because it would save valuable foodstuffs.

Mayor ralf hartnack also praised tim pistor's exemplary action and the help of the horticultural association.

Edith wagner wished that other wine presses in the district would also be involved in similar campaigns, because the campaign had been very labor-intensive for the horticultural association.
