Making a Positive Impact

Have you ever thought about the people who have impacted you positively and how you impact others? Have you ever noticed that some people have a knack for making a positive impact on others?

A Look Back

Take a moment to look back over your life and see if you can identify those people who have had the greatest impact on your life. It could be parents, friends, teachers, bosses, co-workers, or any number of people. Of the people you identified, how many would you say predominately had a positive impact?

If you are like me there are quite a few. The hard part is getting past the negative impact someone may have had and focus on the positive impact.

Personal Life

Some of the people who have impacted me the most for the good have done so in my personal life. They are the ones that drove home the importance of things like integrity, respect for others, responsibility, diligence, etc. A handful not only succeeded in making a positive impact on me, but I also was able to observe them do the same in the lives of others.

Work Life

I certainly hope you have had the privilege of working with or for someone who impacted you for good. If so, how did they do it? There is one particular person, among several, who impacted my work life for good. This was someone I worked who seemed to have a unique ability to connect with people. How did he do that? Well for one thing, he listened. By doing this he demonstrated he respected others and their opinions, even when he didn’t agree with them. In addition he was willing to let others vent their frustrations without interrupting or getting upset with them. When someone had finished venting, he was skilled at offering meaningful feedback when appropriate. Even when he didn’t agree with someone it never seemed to impact his opinion of them. In other words, he was one of the rare people truly able to accept the reality that we will not always agree and yet not let it impact the relationship. We should all seek to be that way with those that work for us or with us as well as with those for whom we work.

What about You?

Perhaps you are like the man I described and are making a positive impact on others on a consistent basis. This is a lifelong pursuit. We are all capable of doing this, but it does take some practice and a willingness to set things straight with others when we fall short.
