How Flex Time Helps Business

More and more companies are moving to flex hours. Is that beneficial and why?

How many times have you heard the question, “Are you a morning person or an evening person?” The answer is probably a lot. At times this seems to be almost a rhetorical question where the answer was merely to satisfy curiosity or explain why somebody was the way they are. Well, that’s not very helpful. But, when coupled with the idea of flex time it becomes meaningful. Because people operate differently it is often true that flex time helps business. The idea is to try to get the best production from every member of the company.

Time Blocking

When coupled with the idea of time blocking this becomes even more meaningful. Time blocking is merely the concept of blocking into a schedule a specific amount of time to work on a particularly important item. Ideally, this should be during that time when an individual is at their peak. So, if someone performs best in the morning, they may need to block 9:00 to 11:00 AM or 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Along with this, they need to make it clear to others that this is dedicated time to focus exclusively on that one item. I don’t care whether it is a business plan, a marketing or advertising campaign, or whatever. The issue is, set the time aside and make it during a time where your individual productivity is highest. If that means you do it in the early evening, fine. After all, we’re talking about using flex time to our advantage and the benefit of the company.

Time to Regroup

Sometimes the best way flex time helps business is to allow individuals the opportunity to regroup, collect their thoughts, and decide what matters and what doesn’t. This is why it is preferable for a business to occasionally let people take some personal time after a particularly stressful period. We can easily get so caught-up in the busyness of the day-to-day that we miss the big picture and as a result neglect the things that could have the most impact.

When Flex Time Doesn’t Work

Like it or not, there are some positions that have to be staffed at particular hours. Consider things like customer service. We can’t expect customers to have to wait on an employee to be in the mood to help them. Yet, even people in these kinds of positions can often work with others to create some level of flexibility.

While it is not a cure all, in general flex time helps business. Have you considered using this in your company, particularly in concert with the idea of time blocking? You may discover that your employees’ efficiency and effectiveness increase.
