Thankful or Worried?

Tomorrow is another Thanksgiving.  Not all, but most, of us will celebrate this occasion either with family, friends, or both.  Of course, there will be some who are alone at this time.  Most of them would prefer to be with others, but for various reasons are not.

If you have read my previous posts, you know that this is a business blog.  But, today I’ve decided to get away from typical business topics and write about something of even greater importance – attitude.

Are You Thankful?

In business and life in general we tend to get highly focused on what is wrong.  In business it could be that sales are off, employees are not cooperating, communications are not clear, the boss is being mean again, etc.  Likewise, in our personal life we may be experiencing boredom, strained or even broken family relationships (immediate or extended), the growing pains of children that stress them and us, financial issues that seem unending, and a whole host of other issues.  We get so focused on what is wrong that we lose sight of what is right.  It is the age-old problem of seeing the glass as half empty rather than half full.  Yet, if we really pause and think deeply, we will quickly realize that much more is right than is wrong.

Thankfulness – The Worry Cure

So long as we focus on what is wrong, we seem to be unable to see what is good and right.  To complicate matters even more, our focus on what is wrong creates two new problems.  One, we are paralyzed and unable to develop solutions.  Two, our focus on the bad keeps us in a constant state of worry and stress.  The truth is, much of what we worry about has not happened and never will.  It is an age old tendency to do this.

I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.” – Mark Twain

In fact it is part of our human condition that God has warned us about.

So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”  Matthew 6:34 (Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount).

What is the best way to stop worrying about tomorrow and even to see the actual troubles of today in the correct light?  I think the key is to focus on what is right and to remind ourselves to be thankful for those things.  If we really spend some time reflecting on how blessed we really are, the bad begins to fade in significance.  Yes, there still will be problems to be addressed, but our attitude will be changed.
